Fish Skin, Eat or Not?

When served with fish, many people will only take the filet and leave the fish skin when the meal finishes. Some even will first peel off the fish skin carefully, as if it’s toxic.

Meanwhile, many big organizations have also stated that it’s not healthy to eat fish skin, as the contaminants from water usually are concentrated in skin, for which reason consumers are often advised to remove the skin while eating fish.

As for grilling, seafood is a great choice, say, freshly grill salmon is many grillers’ love. However, people’s opinions vary in eating the skin or not. As a matter of fact, it is fine to eat fish skin. For example, salmon skin contains concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids, which is healthy. Some even eat the fish skin especially since they love it so much. However, it should be noticeable that the fish are from open and clear water. If the fish come from contaminated water, the toxic pollutants are more likely to be concentrated in skin, which is the reason why we shouldn’t eat the fish skin. But then, the fish filet itself would also collect these toxic pollutants.

So here’s the thing, eating fish skin or not depends on whether the fish come from contaminated water, and it’s not that the skin itself is toxic.

As for those frequent fish-eaters, it’s better to remove the skin if you are not sure about the environment the fish lived. On the other hand, if you just eat fish occasionally, it’s fine to eat that skin, as the nutrition in skin outweighs the risks.

Therefore, if you are now planning for your next barbecue party, don’t be scared of preparing the delicious fish filet, as long as the dish is cooked well, your guests will love it!

We have had a barbecue party last weekend and made great smoked salmon, which tasted phenomenal! The perfect-performance Royal Gourmet charcoal grill is the key. The salmon filet was eaten up in seconds, and no skin left!
